COURSE DESCRIPTION: Through coverage of the
fundamental principles of Gregg Shorthand.
Emphasis on diction, transcription, English, and
spelling. Must
pass two 50 wpm test. 3 credits, (3 lecture , 2
lab).
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this course is to
introduce thoroughly the fundamental principles of Greg shorthand and to build
a strong foundation of dictation, transcription, English, and spelling for
further skill building.
COURSE GOALS:
General
Objectives
1. Display shorthand skills by achieving
required rates of proficiency.
2. Exhibit ability to use related English skills, such as
correct spelling techniques and standard grammatical construction.
3. Identify alphabetic strokes and spell
out shorthand symbols containing these strokes.
Specific
Objectives
1. Recognize shorthand symbols on the word
level by reading connected material fluently.
2. Product fluent shorthand notes by using
correct writing techniques.
3. Read and write given lists of brief
forms accurately and rapidly.
4. Take dictation of lists or write
correct shorthand outline for lists of brief forms and
brief form derivatives, and
transcribe these lists with 70 percent proficiency or higher.
5. Reinforce shorthand writing and reading
by doing specified amounts of shorthand outside of class.
6. Display dependability by consistently
submitting all assigned work on due dates.
7. Increase shorthand speed by taking
dictation at increasing rates of speed.
8. Write in shorthand a given list of 25
to 50 theory words with 70 percent proficiency or higher.
Student
information: A yearly student handbook is
published which provides detailed information to students about Houston
Community College System (HCCS). Data such as withdrawal policies, refund
policies, incompletes, late assignments, make-ups, extra credit, grading
system, attendance requirements, and other details are included in the yearly
student handbook.
CLASS
ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend
classes regularly. Class attendance is
the responsibility of the student.
Students are responsible for materials covered during their absence, and it is the
student's responsibility to consult with the
instructor for make-up assignments.
INCOMPLETES: The grade of "I" (incomplete) is conditional. A student receiving an "I" must
arrange with the instructor to complete the course work by the end of the
following term (excluding summer). After
the deadline, the "I" becomes an "F". All "I's"
must be changed to grades prior to graduation.

BRIEF FORMS
TESTS:
At least five brief form tests of approximately
50 words per test should be administered during the semester. Daily quizzes on brief forms and phrases are
recommended. The students should achieve
a 98 percent accuracy rate on the best four out of five tests.
FINAL EXAM:
The
final exam should cover all of the previous form areas -- transcription,
dictation, theory, and brief forms.
