Core curriculum course.
GEOL 1345 Introduction to Oceanography
Credit: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab)
An introduction to the world's oceans, emphasizing the geological, physical, biological, chemical, and ecological aspects of the marine environment.
Core curriculum course.
GEOL 1346 Introduction to Astronomy
Prerequisite: MATH 1314 or equivalent
Credit: 3 (3 lecture)
An introduction to astronomy, emphasizing the physical laws governing the solar system, the study of the planets and of the stars.
Core curriculum course.
GEOL 1403 Physical Geology
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 3 lab)
Study of the nature of the earth, including the physical processes operating on and inside the earth. Laboratory includes the study of rocks, minerals, and topographic maps.
Core curriculum course.
GEOL 1404 Historical Geology
Prerequisite: GEOL 1403
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 3 lab)
Study of the history of the earth, its life and geologic time. Laboratory includes the study of sedimentary rocks, fossils, and maps.
Core curriculum course.
GEOL 2430 Environmental Geology
Prerequisites: GEOL 1305 or GEOL 1403 and MATH 1314 or equivalent.
Credit: 4 (3 lecture, 3 lab)
The applied study of geology from an environmental perspective that focuses on interactions between humans and the earth's surface and resources. The course includes the study of soils, natural hazards, river flooding, landslides and debris flows, earthquakes, volcano eruption, coastal hazards, surface water and ground water use and pollution, wind erosion and desertification, solid waste management and pollution, mineral resources, energy resources (both fossil fuels and alternative energy sources), and geologic factors in urban and regional land-use planning. The laboratory portion of the course consists of labs dealing with environmental geologic topics.
